Palmetto, Florida -- Due to unfavorable land conditions and the expense to repair it, Manatee County officials are recommending halting plans to build new baseball fields for Palmetto's North River Little League.

Mother charged in baby's death

Manatee County, Florida -- Detectives have arrested the mother of a baby who died as the result of a head injury in September 2010.

Police say Windy Nash failed to protect her child, Payton Nash Moistner, from repeated abuse at the hand of her live-in boyfriend, John Morico.

An investigation revealed the baby suffered from five incidents of abuse over a two-week period. Morico is currently serving a 10-year sentence for Manslaughter in connection with in 11-month-old's death.

Nash, 21, has been charged with Aggravated Manslaughter of a Child.

Police seek help identifying young man killed in traffic crash

Palmetto Police Department investigators are working with detectives from the Arizona Department of Public Safety to help identify a young man who died in a traffic crash in Maricopa County, Arizona on June 17, 1987.

Authorities say it is likely that the teenager came from or passed through Palmetto on his way to Arizona.

In a flier sent out to the media, it describes the young man between 15-17 years old, 5'-10", 169 pounds with brown hair, brown eyes and tattoo on upper right chest. He was last seen wearing a green tank top, black shorts, white socks and tennis shoes.

Husband charged in babysitter's death

Bradenton, Florida -- Detectives investigating the death of a woman found in her Bradenton home Tuesday have charged her husband with murder.

The Manatee Sheriff's Office says the body of 38-year-old Alisa June Hartmann was found inside her home in the 2000 block of Harvard Avenue, just before noon Tuesday.

Authorities say her body showed signs of trauma. While police were on scene investigating, her husband, Nicholas Hartmann, came home and made statements regarding the woman's death.

Police: Card game leads to deadly shooting

Palmetto, Florida -- One man was killed and another hospitalized after a card game turned into a shootout at a rooming house.

According to the sheriff's office, Davell Kendricks showed up at Manatee Memorial Hospital on Jan. 1 suffering from a non-life threatening gunshot wound. When detectives questioned Kendricks about it, he said he was hit by a stray bullet during a shooting at the house at 2324 5th Ave. Dr. E.

Another man, 26-year-old Rashawn Scott, was found dead at the house when police arrived.

Longboat Key police chief dies in motorcycle crash

LONGBOAT KEY, Florida (AP) - Officials in Longboat Key say Police Chief Al Hogle was killed when his motorcycle crashed while he was vacationing in North Carolina. He was 63.

Longboat Key Fire Chief Paul Dezzi told the Bradenton Herald that Hogle was on an outing with about a half dozen police friends when his motorcycle went off the road and crashed about 1 p.m. Monday.

Further details about the crash were not immediately available.

UPDATE: Police locate 12-year-old runaway

Ellenton, Florida -- UPDATE: Police have located Brianna Mathews and returned her to her home.  We will continue to update if more information becomes available.

Detectives are investigating the case of a missing 12-year-old girl who ran away from home last night.

The sheriff's office says Brianna Nicole Mathews, of Ellenton, hasn't been heard from or seen since.

She is described as 5'1", 100 pounds, with brown hair and blue eyes.
